Most ultrasound exams in our clinic in Lisbon do not require a referral from another doctor — you can book directly with Dr. Nuno Martins.

Preparation for ultrasound examinations (when needed):
- Abdominal ultrasound (liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen): usually requires fasting for several hours before the exam (no food; small sips of water and necessary medications are allowed, unless otherwise instructed).
- Pelvic and urinary bladder ultrasound: often requires a full bladder; you may be asked to drink water 1–2 hours before the exam and not to urinate.
- Prostate ultrasound (transabdominal): usually performed with a moderately full bladder.
- Vascular, thyroid, breast, joint, soft tissue and most pediatric ultrasounds: generally do not require special preparation.
Specific preparation instructions will be explained at the time of booking and in your appointment confirmation, so that your ultrasound in Lisbon with Dr. Nuno Martins is as informative and comfortable as possible.
What to expect during your ultrasound:
- The doctor will apply a special gel to the skin to ensure good contact between the probe and the body.
- The examination is performed with a handheld probe that is moved gently over the area being studied.
- You may occasionally be asked to hold your breath or change position to improve image quality.
- The procedure is usually quick and painless; most exams take between 15 and 20 minutes.
- At the end of the exam, the doctor will prepare a written report; you will receive printed images and, if requested, digital copies sent by email.
