Regular visits to a gynecologist are essential at every stage of a woman’s life, even in the absence of symptoms. An annual routine examination — including a pelvic assessment, liquid-based cytology, HPV testing, and transvaginal ultrasound — allows for early detection of conditions that may develop silently.

Our international team of gynecologists (English-speaking) provides evidence-based, patient-centered care following the highest clinical standards. Every doctor performs a transvaginal ultrasound during the consultation, ensuring immediate diagnostics and a clear treatment plan on the same day.

We understand that a gynecological visit requires sensitivity and comfort. That is why we prioritize a gentle and respectful approach: disposable skirts and socks, heated ultrasound gel, a private environment, and modern equipment that allows accurate diagnostics with minimal discomfort.

Convenient online booking, same-day appointments, and a wide range of services — make our clinic accessible, efficient, and supportive for women of all ages.

Reasons to See a Gynecologist
  • Menstrual cycle irregularities
  • Pelvic pain or discomfort
  • Pregnancy planning and pregnancy management (including all required documentation)
  • Itching, burning, redness, or swelling in the genital area
  • Unusual discharge or unpleasant odor
  • Discomfort during urination or recurrent cystitis
  • Symptoms of menopause or perimenopause

Even without symptoms, a consultation is recommended after unprotected sexual contact, a change of partner, or if an infection has been detected in a partner. Women who are pregnant, sexually active, or multiple partners, or a positive HIV status should undergo regular preventive examinations.

Frequently Asked Questions — Women's Health & Gynecology at UMC Lisbon

Looking for an English-speaking gynecologist in Lisbon? Find answers to the most common questions about women's health care at UMC Lisbon below.

Q1: What gynecological services does UMC Lisbon offer?

UMC Lisbon provides comprehensive women's health care for patients of all ages — from adolescents to adults. Our experienced gynecologists offer routine check-ups, pregnancy care and monitoring, Pap smear and HPV testing (including oncocytology for early cancer screening), contraception consultations, IUD and implant insertion and removal, gynecological ultrasound, and online consultations. A breast specialist and breast ultrasound are also available at the clinic when needed.

Q2: Do I need a referral to see a gynecologist at UMC Lisbon?

No referral is needed. You can book directly online at lisbon.umc.clinic, via WhatsApp, or through our Telegram bot — and be seen as soon as this week. Unlike large private hospitals, UMC Lisbon makes access to specialist care straightforward and fast.

Q3: Do your gynecologists speak English?

Yes. All of our gynecologists, as well as all nurses, administrators, and call center staff, speak English and Portuguese fluently. Many team members also speak French, Spanish, German, and other languages. You will always be able to communicate clearly and comfortably with your doctor.

Q4: Do gynecologists perform ultrasound during the consultation?

Yes. At UMC Lisbon, our gynecologists perform gynecological ultrasound themselves during the consultation — no separate appointment or additional referral needed. This allows for a more complete assessment in a single visit and means you get answers the same day.

Q5: What is a Pap smear with HPV test, and why is it important?

The Pap smear combined with HPV (human papillomavirus) testing — also called oncocytology — is one of the most effective tools for early detection of cervical cancer and pre-cancerous changes. It is a quick, minimally uncomfortable procedure performed during a routine gynecological examination. Early detection significantly improves treatment outcomes.

Q6: Does UMC Lisbon offer pregnancy care and monitoring?

Yes. Our gynecologists provide full pregnancy follow-up, including regular consultations, ultrasounds, and all necessary documentation — pregnancy certificates, referral letters, and medical records required for insurance, employers, or official purposes.

Q7: Can UMC Lisbon insert or remove an IUD or contraceptive implant?

Yes. Our gynecologists insert and remove intrauterine devices (IUDs) and contraceptive implants. During your consultation, your doctor will help you choose the most suitable method and perform the procedure safely in the clinic.

Q8: Is breast health also covered at UMC Lisbon?

Yes. UMC Lisbon also offers consultations with a breast specialist (mammologist) and breast ultrasound examinations when needed.

Q9: Can I have a gynecological consultation online?

Yes. UMC Lisbon offers online video consultations with our gynecologists for follow-up visits, discussing test results, contraception advice, or general women's health questions.

Q10: Does UMC Lisbon accept health insurance for gynecological visits?

Yes. We work with international and Portuguese insurance providers including AXA, Cigna, Ensuria, International SOS, Viscura, Fidelidade, Multicare, Medicare, and Medis. Consultation fee is €120.
